Italy Road Trip

This past August I went to Italy to eat, explore new places and soak in the sunshine on a road trip from Rome-Bari. I finally got around to gathering up my pictures and notes from our adventures..I hope this inspires you to book your Italian vacation!

Where to Stay: We loved our affordable and homey stay at La Mongolfiera Rooms. You could easily find a hostel or an Airbnb or a higher end hotel - there are so many options in the capital city of Italy.

  • Piazza Navona - a beautiful square & fountain

  • Trevi Fountain - iconic fountain (very busy! I suggest going first thing in the morning)

  • The Forum - great restaurants and streets to get lost in around this area

  • Colosseum - iconic spot to see!

  • Santa Lucia - beautiful courtyard for breakfast or dinner

  • Tonnarello - delicious pasta served right from the pot in the heart of Trastevere

  • Da Enzo Al 29 – famous for house made pasta

  • Terrazza Borromini - beautiful rooftop with great views of the city

  • Hotel Raphael - another beautiful rooftop

  • Hotel De Russie - adorable courtyard

  • Osteria Delle Coppelle - restaurant and speakeasy cocktail bar in a great area full of restaurants

  • Fatamorgana - delicious gelato for dessert

  • Frigidarium - more gelato

We drove from Rome to Naples, stopping for lunch at the famous, L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele - what Naples style pizza dreams are made of. As seen in Eat Pray Love - the lines at this place are crazy - locals and tourists line up at all hours of the day to get their hands on this stuff. I recommend ordering out and taking it to sit outside and enjoy in peace.

  • La Sorgente Sorrento - beautiful rooftop

  • Ristorante O Parrucchiano Sorrento - beautifully lit traditional Italian restaurant with string lights hanging from lemon trees & delicious food!

  • Rent a Boat

    • The most economical option is to take a ferry from Sorrento or Positano to Capri and spend the day on the island. The better option is to book a boat tour or rent a private boat. The boat tours with a skipper range in price depending on the amount of people that are on the boat with you.

      30-60 people – 50 euros

      10-15 – 90 euros

      4-6 people – 120 euros

Renting an entirely private boat for the day with only you and your guests and a skipper can range from 300-600 euros

  • Gardens of Augustus - beautiful spot to visit after shopping or window shopping depending on your budget

  • La Fontelina - Stunning beach club, make reservations in advance

This area of Italy is less explored by most tourists and has always been a dream of mine to visit because my grandfather’s family is from the region. Bari was charming, local, beautiful, full of history and character - I would highly recommend adding this to your list.

  • Grotta Palazzese - a stunning hotel restaurant in a cave - worth the splurge for the experience *reservations only

  • Polignano A Mare Beach Drive - although full on a hot summer day we loved driving through the bustling city and finding a spot on a rock looking in at the beach for the afternoon

This historical town on our way from Sorrento to Bari is truly a hidden gem. Yes, there were visitors but it was not busy at all. We loved spending an afternoon roaming around and admiring the beautiful stone homes.
