How To Save While Backpacking

How to Save

Save on Food

Buying groceries from farmers markets or local grocery stores is a great way to save money on your daily expenses! I loved going to local indoor markets in Europe, buying things like cheese, olives and breads and heading to a park nearby for a picnic. I mostly ate out for dinner during my travels but I did see many travellers making use of the hostel kitchens available, which is another great way to save money. When booking hostels it’s also smart to check that breakfast is included. This is the best way to start your day - for free and feeling energized!

Save on Alcohol

Touristy bars are tourist traps for overpriced drinks. Either try local bars with lower drink prices or head to a convenience/grocery store to buy alcohol for a way lower price than what you would pay during a night out.

Save on Accommodations - Hostels

Living in the moment is only so fun until you realize you have nowhere to sleep. To avoid overspending last minute book popular city destinations in advance. Places like Rome, Venice, Paris and normally expensive spots like Switzerland should be booked at least a month in advance.

Save on Flights

This is so important when you are backpacking. If you’re planning to bring your pack as your carry on you should make sure that the airlines you are flying with will allow the weight of your bag and what you pack onboard the plane. You also want to make sure that you check in to all of your flights in advance to avoid being charged late fees when you get to the airport.

How to Save Plane

Save on Attractions

Tourist attractions can be expensive and if you plan on seeing all of them the cost will add up. In order to best plan your trip look into what attractions you need to visit and see when they might be offered at a lower price, for free or if some kind of discount, like a student discount, can be applied.

Save on Tours

If you can, avoid paying for a bus tour and take a free walking tour around the city. Many cities offer day and night tours, which are great ways to get to know the city you are visiting. I would suggest doing these kinds of tours on the first day in the city so after that you can travel around on your own.

Save on Accommodations - Luxury

If you are traveling with a group of friends you should definitely consider booking Airbnbs instead of hostels. Splitting the cost of an Airbnb is a great way to score beautiful homes at affordable prices.
